When the Chicago Blackhawks won their third most recent Stanley Cup in 2010, I had the thought to collect the United Center ice and package it as a direct mail piece to send to season ticket holders. I was too little too late though and it never got done.
Luckily enough, the team won again in 2013 and the plan got put into action. But, because it was 2013 and no one needed direct mail and because the Blackhawks didn’t actually need any new season ticket holders, we decided we’d sell off the Blackhawks home “ice” for charity.
The results were amazing. National news. Twitter buzz. The whole run sold out in less than a day and we raised over $200,000 for Blackhawks Charities.
Of course when they won again a couple years later we had to do it again. This time we refined the packaging with the latest innovation in technology – LED lights!
